Io Ho Ventuno Anni!

My birthday weekend was great! I made it last from Thursday (counting down til midnight) until Saturday (when I could celebrate with Elizabeth). My birthday was on a Friday, a perfect day for a 21st celebration. The only thing was that I would have liked to celebrate this significant year in America. Oh well, I didn't mind celebrating in Florence too much. My upstairs neighbor Nicole suggested we have people over on Thursday for an American game of beer pong. I agreed half-jokingly, unsure if it would really work out considering its more difficult to find good sized cups and ping pong balls over here. Sure enough she came through and brought the supplies and I made sure to let everyone know to come over for the party. It was totally on a whim, but it ended up with about 25 people in our house playing beer pong the same as we would back at Marist. It was a great time, but naturally we made our way downstairs later in the night to hang out at our beloved Bigallo. I informed the owner, Giorgio, that it was my 21st birthday. He asked to check my ID (which I thought was hilarious because it was the only time I was ever IDed over here). After seeing that I was not lying and it was in fact my 21st birthday, he asked how many people I was with. I saw a few friends close to the bar and just yelled out a number, "Cinque!" He poured out five shot glasses and we cheered to being ventuno. After a few drinks I felt satisfied of Part I of my birthday celebration. I went back upstairs to call it a night. I woke up in the morning on our couch with my roommate's blanket and obscene things written on my face and hand, not knowing how I got there. My first thought was, "Last night had to be a good night!"

To continue the birthday festivities on Friday (my actual birthday), I went to Standa to pick up a birthday gift for myself. I wanted to buy some decent beer, because I deserved it on my birthday. There was a sale on Heinekens so i decided to pick up a few. My housemate Mike suggested I get a whole carton since I was buying a good amount anyway (this is rare, in Italy we usually buy beer individually). The carton had fifteen Heinekens so it worked out to be a good size for what I was looking for. I loaded the carton into the shopping basket with wheels and made my way to the front knowing I looked like ridiculously like an "ugly American." I didn't care, it was my birthday. As I passed by a few American girls I heard them laugh. So I turned around and told them I was thirsty. What are the chances one of them was a girl I met while visiting my best friends at Stonehill two years ago? (more evidence that it really is a small world) Anyway we started my actual birthday night by going to Bigallo again. It was a lot of fun and everyone was there. Then I made it out to Lion's Fountain after that, where I milked the 21st card and got some more free shots. I stayed in control the whole night because I knew I had a big day ahead of me the next morning to pick Elizabeth up from the Pisa airport.
